Gas Mask Drill

When I was at the Old Infant School during WW2 the Pavillion on the New Rec was used as a gas shelter and we had to walk through with gas masks on to make sure we were safe if we had a raid.

The picture shows a house on Church Lane (still there today) which appears to be the local party headquarters for the Liberal Party. Signs outside declare “Vote for Montagu” and there are posters all over the front. This likely places the photo at 1910 when Edwin Montagu was re-elected as member of parliament for the Chesterton Division which covered Cambridge and the surrounding villages. During WWI Montagu became Minister for Munitions and was then appointed Secretary of State for India.

My great grandfather, Arthur Searle in the house (now demolished) that I remember from my childhood.Grandmother Lillian May Careless, Grandfather Clarence (Mick) Careless,mother Queenie M S Careless (now Pettit)- never knew his nickname was Ponto !!

This is Jane Robinson nee Lack (my grandmother's grandmother) outside of her tavern. She ran the place even after her husband died. It had been in the Lack family for many years. My nan (Hilda Smith nee Waites)would spend Sunday afternoons sewing with the ladies in one of the rooms. I still have the drawn thread work sheets she made there.

Mr Tibett, indeed, worked for my Grandfather Tom Langan. In later years he was the village roadsweeper.
